Being at home can sometimes reduce pressure and allow conversations to feel more natural and emotionally accessible.

At the same time, online therapy is different from face-to-face work, and it is important to be honest about both the strengths and the limits of working this way.

Privacy and confidentiality

Sessions take place using a secure video platform.

Even with secure systems, no form of online communication can ever be guaranteed to be completely risk-free. Part of working ethically online is being open about that reality rather than pretending absolute security exists.

I also ask clients to think carefully about their own environment during sessions.

Where possible, it helps to:

Use a private space

Use headphones if others may overhear

Avoid shared or public environments

Reduce interruptions where possible

Make sure you feel emotionally safe enough to speak openly

Privacy is not only technical. It is emotional as well.

Technical difficulties

Occasionally, internet problems or technical interruptions may happen.

If a session disconnects, we would normally try to reconnect. If that is not possible, we would agree together how to proceed.

Online therapy requires a reasonably stable internet connection and enough privacy for meaningful conversation to take place.

Suitability for online therapy

Online therapy is not suitable for everyone or every situation.

Part of ethical practice is recognising when a person may need a different level of support than independent online therapy can safely provide.

I do not work online with psychotic mental health problems, severe mental health instability requiring intensive support, or situations where someone is in immediate crisis or unable to keep themselves safe.

In some situations, local in-person support, NHS mental health services, crisis services, psychiatric care, or a multidisciplinary approach may be more appropriate.

Your responsibility during online sessions

Because sessions take place remotely, clients remain responsible for the environment they choose to attend sessions from.

This includes:

Ensuring enough privacy for therapy

Avoiding attending sessions while driving or in unsafe environments

Being emotionally and physically safe enough to take part

Making sure contact details are up to date if needed for safety reasons

If I become seriously concerned about someone’s immediate safety, I may need to take appropriate steps in line with professional and ethical responsibilities.

Boundaries and communication

Therapy works best when there are clear and respectful boundaries.

Sessions take place at agreed times. Outside sessions, communication is usually limited to practical matters such as arranging appointments.

I do not provide ongoing crisis support between sessions.

Staying in charge of your therapy

Safety isn’t only about technology and privacy. It’s also about the work itself.

The way I work is built on a simple principle: you remain the person in charge. Good therapy should leave you more able to trust your own judgement, not less. It should not make you feel smaller, more dependent, or afraid to question what is happening.

A few things you are always entitled to:

To ask why we are doing something, and to say no to it

To raise it if something feels off, without it being treated as a problem in you

To slow down, pause, or end the work whenever you choose

To expect clear boundaries, honesty, and respect for your privacy

This applies to me as much as to anyone. If something in our work doesn’t feel right, naming it is welcome — that conversation is part of the work, not a disruption to it.

If you’d like to read more about what safe therapy should feel like, and the warning signs that it isn’t, I’ve gathered plain, practical guidance on a separate free site, Between Paths. It isn’t part of this practice and there’s nothing to pay or sign up for. Explore therapy safety on Between Paths →

A final thought

Online therapy is still real therapy.

What matters most is not whether two people are sitting in the same room, but whether there is enough honesty, safety, attention, and trust for meaningful work to happen.

For many people, online therapy can provide exactly that.

Online therapy can work very well for many people.
