I Don’t Work With

It is important to be honest about the limits of online therapy and the kind of work I offer.

Not every form of emotional or mental health difficulty is suitable for the way I work, and not every person seeking help will be best supported through independent online therapy.

That is not rejection or judgement.

It is about safety, suitability, and recognising where a different kind of support may be more appropriate.

I do not work with psychotic mental health problems

I do not work online with psychotic mental health conditions or experiences where someone is significantly disconnected from shared reality, experiencing active psychosis, severe paranoia, or severe disturbances in perception and thinking.

These situations usually require a higher level of psychiatric, medical, community, or crisis support than I can ethically provide through independent online therapy.

I am not a crisis service

I do not provide emergency mental health support or crisis intervention.

If someone is in immediate danger, actively suicidal, at serious risk of harming themselves or others, or unable to keep themselves safe, they need urgent support from emergency services, crisis teams, NHS mental health services, or other appropriate local services.

Online therapy is not a substitute for emergency care.

Situations where I may not be the right fit

There may also be situations where I believe another form of support would be more suitable.

For example:

Severe addiction where specialist addiction services are needed

Serious eating disorders requiring medical supervision

Severe mental health instability requiring multidisciplinary care

Situations involving ongoing violence or immediate safeguarding risks

Court-ordered therapy or therapy entered under pressure from others

Cases where online communication is too unstable, unsafe, or unsuitable for meaningful therapeutic work

Sometimes a person may still benefit from therapy, but not necessarily from this particular kind of therapy or this particular setting.

That distinction matters.

Therapy should not pretend to be everything

One of the problems within parts of modern therapy culture is the pressure to present therapy as suitable for everyone and capable of helping with everything.

I do not believe that is honest.

Good therapy includes recognising its own limits.

Sometimes the most ethical answer is not “yes.”

Sometimes it is recognising when a different form of support may offer more safety, structure, medical involvement, or practical help than independent online therapy can provide.

A collaborative decision

Part of the purpose of the free first session is to think together about whether this work feels suitable and safe enough to continue.

That decision is not only mine.
It is yours as well.

You should feel able to question, reflect, and decide whether the work feels right for you.

Therapy should never feel like pressure, persuasion, or recruitment.

If I am not the right therapist for you

Not every therapist is right for every person.

Sometimes the fit is wrong.
Sometimes the timing is wrong.
Sometimes a different approach is needed.

That is normal.

Therapy works best when there is enough trust, honesty, safety, and openness for meaningful work to happen.

If I do not believe I am the right person to help, I will say so honestly and respectfully.

[Book a free
